Most schools do have budgets for that, or they can link with their local libraries who can arrange author visits for school groups. Most of the visits I do to libraries are paid by the local council and school groups attend for free.

The one for Birmingham is called Nikki Bi and I know the one for Walsall is Sonia Dixon. They have links with lots of local writers.

Writing West Midlands also has a link to ‘Writing People’ and many of the writers listed are available to go into schools.

It’s great to hear that your school is keen on author visits. Apart from having a look at the NAWE register and the First Story list of authors in my blog post, you could also visit the Write On! project: http://bit.ly/3rvAPn which is Birmingham-based.
What about contacting your local university, especially if it has a Creative Writing department, which a lot of them do these days? They may be able to recommend some student writers who would like to visit.
Another tip (forgive me if you’ve already tried this one) is to ask the parent body! There are bound to be some authors – budding or established – who may be dying for an invitation to share their knowledge.
Hope that helps for the moment. If anyone else has any other ideas please share!
Fiona

I’m a TA in a primary school (year 1 and 2s) and would love to have some writers come and visit. Any advice for how we go about it? Thanks. Alexa
