Solidarity forever! I come from a long line of union organizers back in Pittburgh, so I am sympatico.
Now back to getting published…

Thanks too, Richard, for mentioning the grants and prizes, and other professional opportunities. And yes, you’re right – it’s all about strength in numbers, and making a collective response to issues like, for example, the Google Settlement.

Glad to be of help, David. Drinks on you next time?!!

I just followed your link and discovered I’m owed some money! Who says you can’t make a living out of being an author?

There are other selfish reasons to belong, like the quarterly magazine that gives useful updates on grants and prizes, as well as a classified ads that can throw up interesting opportunities. Mostly, though, it’s in collective strength that the Society has its value. None of us, individually, would have much luck campaigning for PLR rates or protecting libraries. Together, we look like a threatening bunch of no-good home-workers, and stuff gets done.

I couldn’t agree more about the need to join something bigger than you. Unionisation often tends to polarize opinion but I really think that people like writers are soooo isolated that there is an absolute need to have support from outside. This is even more the case these days as technology has thrown up many more ways in which writers can be ripped off, cheated, slandered etc etc.
